Gig Rowing
Cornwall's fastest growing sport. There are now over 2000 people gig rowing in the county and it is no wonder why. These beautiful 33ft clinker built boats, rowed by crews of six, take to the seas in all weather, pounding through the waves or skimming the tidal rivers that characterise Cornwall. Harking back to the days when Pilot Gigs were raced out to sea to win the contract to put a pilot on board vessels coming into harbour, there is a tradition to the sport that gives it an added appeal. As a Helford River Gig Club member, I can vouch for just how much pleasure the sport can give. Since I started a year ago, I have a whole new group of friends, I am fitter than I have ever been and am able to enjoy the water from a whole new perspective. Bar the blisters, which are a gigger's right of passage (literally) this is a great sport that can be taken as socially or competitively as you wish. For clubs in your area visitwww.cpga.co.uk

Tennis
You can't escape tennis in June - everyone suddenly galvanised by the sight and sounds of Wimbledon - but what about in these colder damper months? Whilst playing on a summer's day does have its particular attraction, year round play can actually be very enjoyable. Many of the clubs now boast allweather courts and flood lighting so players can be out rain or shine notching up the sets. We found Penzance Tennis Club to be particularly sociable. With its lovely new clubhouse, a terrace overlooking the courts, excellent facilities and eight courts there are also great opportunities for competing if you decide to get more serious. Existing members turn out on Friday evenings for a friendly hit followed by supper in the clubhouse.

Road Running
One of the best ways to get fit but often the very idea leaves people cold. Going out in a group can be sociable and motivating. Finding others at your level of fitness keeps you going when treading the pavements alone can feel like a long steep climb to reach your fitness goal. Making it fun by throwing in the occasional competition also has its attractions and gives you something to aim for. Hayle Runners offer a very supportive network, encouraging new comers who may never have run before. Tuesday evenings are split into groups that cater for all ages, abilities and levels of fitness so don't worry about being left behind. Find a running club in your area by viewing www.cornwallroadrunning.co.uk.
