Being the Best Visitor

Looking after our environment means a lot to us. We know we have a responsibility and that we can make a difference - we all can.

The visitor charter postcard is just one of the ways we are putting our beliefs into action. By funding this campaign we are spreading a valuable message to 100,000 visitors, reminding everyone that wherever we go, whatever we do we have an impact. Our tips are simple but vital; encouraging visitors to make the right choices about eating local, conserving energy and looking after the coast line.

Supported by Isles of Scilly Travel, the postcards are being sent to anyone purchasing tickets for the Skybus, Steamship or Helicopter. This ensures everyone who steps onto Scilly should be clued up about all manner of ways to keep these precious shores just as beautiful as they are now.

Chemical Free Beaches

Cornwall has some of the most stunning beaches, and they are far more enjoyable when the waters are clean. Help us to keep the coast chemical-free and the marine life safe by using ecological cleaners and detergents.Try www.ecotopia.co.uk for great priced Ecover washing up liquid and 'Eco-Balls' which are an environmentally friendly, efficient, reusable and cost-effective alternative to regular washing powder.

Think Local

Cream teas, local ales, cheese and seafood are all you need after a hard day's sightseeing. The less your food has travelled, the tastier it is. Choose Tribute, Doombar or Betty Stogs Real Ale, visit local farm shops and ask your fishmonger which is the local catch of the day.

Countryside Code

The countryside code reminds us all to protect, respect and enjoy: look after plants and animals; take litter away; leave gates and property as you find them.

Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle

By recycling waste where possible and refusing unnecessary packaging, you can help us maintain our stunning landscape. Look out for Seasalt recycling bins on Scilly!

See the Light

We see things differently in Cornwall, and by making small changes, like switching off lamps and turning off standby buttons, you'll see them too.

Seasalt has just purchased six large recycling bins on Scilly. Scillywaste (www.scillywaste.org.uk) needed funding for six recycling bins to be dotted around the islands - and we were happy to help. Lookout for the bins and make sure you play a part - reduce - re-use - recycle.

We are also sponsoring all the reusable boarding cards for the helicopter journey on the Penzance to St Mary's route. Each card carries an environmental message, helping visitors to have a greener holiday.

In our Seasalt stores we follow the three R's wherever we can. For instance, we recycle all plastic packaging. Whether it is a Seasalt hoodie or a White Stuff skirt, the wrapping around any new item is collected up and sent to our dedicated unit in Penryn. It is collected from here and turned into the plastic covering used on agricultural land. We are pleased to say that plenty of Cornish potatoes have been warmed up with the plastic we collect and recycle.
